The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject released recently features 55 individual subjects across five broad subject areas. 1,559 institutions have been ranked across these subjects this year, with 64 universities debuting (i.e. having not been included in the 2023 edition).
14 of these are completely new entrants making their first appearance in any QS ranking. Music is the one new subject to be added to this year’s rankings, while the data science & artificial intelligence ranking has been expanded and has 51 new institutions included this year.
The rankings are based on five parameters for the participating Institutions and their respective weightages are: Academic Reputation (50%), Employer Reputation (30%), Citations per paper (10%), H-Index (impact and quality of work published by institute’s scholars) (10%).

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has made its debut in the list of top institutions for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, securing a global rank of 36th and the 2nd position within India.
Apart from this, IIT Kanpur has maintained its 5th position in Engineering & Technology in India, achieving a global QS rank of 93 in 2024. In Computer Science, it climbed from 96 to 84, ranking 3rd nationally, while in Electrical Engineering it remains at 96, holding the 5th position in India.
In Mathematics, there has been a notable improvement from 122 to 106, securing the position of 2nd best institute in India. Within Natural Sciences, it progressed from 248 to 215, maintaining its 5th position nationally. In Mechanical Engineering, the institute has jumped from 121 to 101, remaining 6th in India, while in Civil Engineering it has moved from the 101-150 band to the 51-100 band.
IIT Kanpur is vigorously advancing its AI-driven initiatives through strategic collaborations with both public and private entities. A notable partnership is with Samsung R&D Institute, Noida, marked by a five-year memorandum of understanding aimed at enabling joint research projects involving IIT Kanpur students, faculty, and Samsung engineers, facilitating industry-aligned skill development.
Moreover, IIT Kanpur is furthering its AI-driven endeavors by the institute’s upcoming Medical School partnering with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to enhance telemedicine through AI. The institute had last year also joined hands with e-commerce giant Moglix to fuel innovation and entrepreneurship in artificial intelligence.
IIM Kozhikode’s overall Score up to nearly 12% from 61.7 (2023) to 69.1 (2024) and is now ranked in the band 151-200 in 2024, for ‘Business & Management’ Studies. Globally IIMK now stands with Cardiff University (United Kingdom), Deakin University (Australia), University of Wollongong (Australia), The University of Western Australia (Australia), Keio University (Japan), Kyoto University (Japan), Lund University (Sweden), Maastricht University (Netherlands), University of Texas Dallas Richardson (United States), University College Dublin (Ireland), University of Zurich (Switzerland) – and many other leading Universities.

MAHE’s Rankings in the broad subject of Life Sciences have improved significantly, currently standing at 317, an improvement of 51 places from last year’s rank of 368. Among the 150 ranked universities worldwide, only Manipal Academy of Higher Education is ranked from India under the Anatomy and Physiology subject. Under the Dentistry subject, there are 100 universities ranked, out of which only 2 universities are from India, MAHE being one of them.
As compared to the previous year’s ranking, three narrow subjects have been ranked under the 200 band this year (Dentistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and Pharmacy & Pharmacology).
GLS at 72nd in the World, at top in India for 5 years in a Row and
Besides JGLS, two other Law Schools from India have made it to the prestigious list this year — National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru (ranked 151-200), and the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi (ranked 201-250).
JGLS has been ranked higher than such globally reputed institutions as University of Nottingham, UK (ranked 78th), University of Texas at Austin, USA (ranked 79th), Waseda University, Japan (ranked 84th) and George Washington University, USA (ranked 89th), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore (ranked 91st), Boston University, USA (ranked 93rd), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China (ranked 94th), University of Vienna, Austria (ranked 98th), University of Geneva, Switzerland (ranked 99th) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024.
