Government schools and aided ones under the state board in Tamil Nadu will have a fully upgraded syllabus with computer science and artificial technology integrated into it for the next academic year. This was shared by Dr. S. Kannappan, Director of School Education while speaking at a conclave on AI technology for school education held by the faculty of engineering and Technology of Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research on March 22.

The revision, undertaken with the association of leading IT companies will be over in the next 15 days, he said.  To modernize school education the state government has set up high tech labs in 6029 higher secondary schools.  500 aided schools under the state board will also get it in the next three months at a cost of Rs.56 crores. Over 8000 government middle schools will get the high-tech labs each with ten computers by the end of this month. 22931 primary schools are also getting smart class rooms. Training all the teachers in the use of computers and artificial intelligence is the next major challenge he said and urged engineering colleges and universities to help the government.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Abirami Murugappan, Professor, department of Information Science & Technology, Anna University said that their research scholars have developed several models for empowering teachers and students in schools with artificial intelligence from class six onwards as per the new education policy. Some researchers have adopted a school each to implement it.

Prof. T. Ragunathan, Dean, Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Engineering and Technology said a centre for AI in education is proposed to be opened at SRIHER.  At the conclave faculty and students displayed their several projects like breath analyser with noncontact monitoring of respiratory functions, blind person helper smart glass, NeetQA gamified learning app, foetal head circumference measurement for early detection of abnormalities and smart bandage for faster wound healing.

Over 90 principals and senior teachers from over 60 schools of Tamil Nadu participated in the event.
