In a vibrant celebration of World Earth Day, Panasonic Life Solutions India (PLSIND), a leading diversified technology company, successfully hosted an impactful initiative as part of Panasonic Harit Umang (“Joy of Green”) program, at Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi. The event, themed “Celebrating the Longest Chain of Sustainability for Plastic Circularity,” engaged young Green Ambassadors in promoting responsible behaviour towards a sustainable future and building a zero-plastic ecosystem through a remarkable single-use plastic bag collection drive, in line with the vision of Panasonic Green Impact.

Launched with a walkathon to raise mass awareness across Delhi University’s North Campus, the campaign was initiated with the spirit to challenge the existing declared Guinness World Record for the Longest Chain of Plastic Bags (of 40174 bags forming approx. 9.56 miles of chain). Over the course of the Harit Umang contest, eight volunteer colleges participated, collecting an impressive 43890 plastic bags indicating the overachievement vis-a-vis the previous record in number of collection. Post training webinars, these bags were further converted into a chain.

Commenting on this initiative,  Manish Sharma, Chairman & Enterprise Growth Strategy Officer, Panasonic Life Solutions India, said “Our Panasonic Harit Umang initiative reflects Panasonic’s unwavering commitment to nurturing a sustainable future. This record-breaking effort is a testament to the power of collective action.”

The culmination ceremony on April 22 brought together students, faculty, principals of eight participating colleges, along with Pratibha Sharma, Project Specialist, UNDP India and Dr Reva Prakash, Resources Efficiency and Environment Policy Advisor, GIZ to honour the Green Ambassadors’ contributions to a plastic-waste-free campus. Mr Adarsh Mishra, Chief Human Resource Officer, Panasonic Life Solutions India, also present at the event, added “By engaging the youth, we are not only addressing the critical issue of plastic waste but also inspiring a generation to champion responsible environmental practices.”

Ritu Ghosh, Head of Corporate Affairs, Panasonic Life Solutions India commented, “The enthusiasm and dedication of Delhi University’s students have been truly inspiring. Through this initiative, we aim to amplify the message of plastic circularity and empower young minds to lead the charge for a greener planet. Their efforts today pave the way for a more sustainable tomorrow.”

The collected plastic bags, now transformed into a chain, will advance to the next stage of the application to Guinness World Record for further verification process. The event at Daulat Ram College highlighted Panasonic’s dedication to environmental stewardship, encouraging sustainable practices that resonate with global and national goals. By fostering youth-driven initiatives, Panasonic continues to drive meaningful change towards a circular economy.

Panasonic Group globally is contributing to the decarbonization of society through the Panasonic Green Impact initiative. The objective of the campaign – by 2050, Panasonic Group aims to create impact that reduces CO2 emissions by more than 300 million tons, or about 1% of the current total global emissions.
