Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) and Hindustan International Schools, Chennai virtually signed a Memorandum Of Understanding according to which Korean Cultural Centre India is to open and operate Korean language classes as curriculum based. This was the first time in South India, to teach Korean as a curriculum based subject at an Indian school. Eight school officials including Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Director & CEO and three Principals of Hindustan International School attended at the Virtual Signing Ceremony.

At the event Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese thanked (KCCI) for providing students with the opportunity for Korean language education and said he expected this start to further play a role in the development of Korea-India relations. The classes will begin on July 5 for sixth-grade students at each school, with two non face-to-face classes per week. Teachers, textbooks and curriculum required for the classes will be supported by KCCI.

After Korean language was adopted as one of the recommended foreign language at 2020 NEP in India, the demand for Korean language in Indian schools has also soared in line with the recent Korean Wave in India, and KCCI has signed MOUs with 20 Indian schools this year for opening and operating Korean language classes.

Hwang Il-yong, Director of Korean Cultural Centre India, said, “I am happy to provide Korean language education opportunities to Chennai, a major hub of Korean companies in India, and I am grateful that Hindustan International School, which is trying to provide students with uninterrupted educational opportunities even during this difficult time due to Corona, has adopted Korean as a curriculum based subject. I think this MOU will deepen the friendship between the two countries, India and South Korea.”
