The Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, in association with the Ocean Society of India (OSI), National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), Mangrove Foundation of India, 4i Apps Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and the Forest Department, Tamil Nadu, commemorated the World Mangrove Day on July 26, 2025 with a Mangrove Sapling Plantation Drive in Kovalam coastal region.

As part of the initiative, 1,350 mangrove saplings were planted along the Kovalam backwaters. The plantation witnessed active participation from SRMIST Kattankulathur, Anna University, SRM Valliammai Engineering College, and other institutions, along with environmental volunteers and community members.

A notable feature of this drive was the introduction of Bio-Roll technology, an innovative method for mangrove afforestation pioneered by NEEDS NGO. This eco-friendly technique enhances sapling survival, prevents coastal erosion, and contributes to the restoration of degraded shorelines. The initiative not only supports climate change mitigation but also promotes community-based conservation, aligning with SDG Goals 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

An orientation session on mangrove plantation was conducted by Mr. Meerasa and Mr. Abdul Rahaman, representatives from the Mangrove Foundation of India, to educate and guide the participants on effective planting methods and ecosystem importance.

The drive was formally inaugurated by Dr. R.S. Kankara, Director & Scientist G, NCCR, and Pon Senthil, Ranger, Forest Coastal Security Group Department, who led the ceremonial planting. The program was further dignified by the presence of eminent guests, including
Dr. Tune Usha, Chairperson, OSI Chennai Chapter & Scientist G, NCCR;
Ms. Jossia Joseph, Vice-Chairperson, OSI Chennai Chapter & Scientist F, NIOT; and
Mr. K. Thirumurugan, Secretary, OSI Chennai Chapter & Scientist E, NIOT, who served as Guests of Honour.

This joint initiative highlighted the critical role of mangrove ecosystems in enhancing ecological and climate resilience. Mangroves play a vital part in coastal protection, erosion control, biodiversity conservation, and act as natural buffers against extreme weather events, thus making them essential for the sustainability of coastal regions.

A spokesperson from SRMIST stated,“This plantation drive reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. By working together, we can restore and protect these vital ecosystems for future generations.”
