The 8th edition of India Ranking was released in New Delhi by the union MoS Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh in presence of top officials of various higher education regulatory bodies and ministry along with delegates from the top ranking HEIs that were felicitated on the occasion. This year the total participation has gone upto 8686 HEIs, number of categories and subject domains have increased to 13 in 2023.

Here are links to India rankings  2023 in popular categories. The annual national rankings were announced on June 5.

With IIT Madras maintaining the number position this year too, the top 25 positions have remained nearly consistent ever since NIRF was launched and India Rankings commenced in 2016.

The ranking exercise for the year 2023 continues with the practice of providing a common “Overall” rank in addition to a separate rank for Universities, Research Institutions, Degree Colleges, and discipline-specific ranks in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Dental and Architecture & Planning. Agriculture & Allied Sectors and Innovation are two verticals added to the ranking exercise from 2023 onward.

Unlike other rankings in the popular media, India Rankings deploys objective parameters and metrics with factual data gathered from applicant institutions themselves as well as from third party sources such as Web of Science, Scopus and Derwent Innovation. Several improvements in data collection formats, metrics and comparison methodology were adopted and put in practice for India Rankings over the past eight years.  As a result, the ranking of institutions has largely remained consistent, especially amongst 25 top-ranked institutions, over the years, although individual ranks might have changed by a few slots for some institutions due to performance variations across institutions on some of the parameters. “This demonstrate that the set of parameters that are being used for ranking are compact, coherent and inter-dependent. In the process, India Rankings is successful in identifying top institutions of higher education in India in five categories and eight subject domains mentioned,’ says the rankings table report foreword.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters, i.e. Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR). Rankings are based on the information and data provided by the institutions. Data on publications and citations have been taken from standard indexing and citation sources, viz., Scopus (Elsevier Science) and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). Perception data has been compiled from inputs from employers and peers. NIRF Team has done limited validation of data.

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has retained its position as the leading Indian management institute for the fourth consecutive year in the rankings list. Since the ranking started in 2016, IIMA has been placed in the top position in 2017, 2018 and then again from 2020 onwards.

Commenting on the win, Professor Bharat Bhasker, Director, IIMA, said, “We are delighted to be acknowledged as the best management institute in India by the Ministry of Education’s NIRF 2023 rankings. This recognition is a testament to IIMA’s world-class education, and the cutting-edge research conducted by our faculty, which has a significant influence on business and public policy, alongside the unrelenting efforts of our students, year after year. This further strengthens our resolve to uphold high standards of excellence in every aspect of what we do and continue to contribute meaningfully to our nation’s growth.”

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has retained its position in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF), achieving 7th Rank in ‘Engineering’ Category this year. The Institute has achieved 9th Rank in both ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ Categories this year.  Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “As envisioned in NEP 2020, IIT Guwahati imparts technical education with a multidisciplinary mandate providing holistic development opportunities to its students. The results are directly reflecting the student and faculty contributions in this achievement.”

Chitkara University has been ranked in 101-150 band overall and has been ranked in the Band of 11-50 in overall Innovation Category, which includes all Government /Private /Deemed / Institutions of National Importance in the NIRF Innovation Ranking (Formerly known as ARIIA Ranking). Chitkara University secured the 16th rank in Pharmacy category, got the 30th rank in Architecture category, 64th rank in Management category and 92nd rank in the Engineering category.  Dr. Madhu Chitkara said, “These rankings are a reflection of the quality education, well-regarded programs and global approach taken by the university.”
