IIT Ropar Launches New B.Tech. Curriculum For 2026 Batch

The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has revamped its undergraduate engineering curriculum, replacing a largely rigid course structure with a flexible, student-driven framework that will take effect from the academic session 2026-27. The institute says the change is designed to prepare engineers not just for jobs, but for research, entrepreneurship and leadership in a rapidly changing world. Admissions under the new curriculum will open with the incoming B.Tech. batch of Academic Session 2026-27.

Under the new B.Tech. Curriculum 2026, students will complete most of their compulsory core courses by the end of the fifth semester. The remaining three semesters will be largely free for advanced electives, internships, research projects, startup work and interdisciplinary exploration. Students can draw on up to 30 credits of open electives, allowing them to study subjects well outside their parent discipline. The four-year programme carries a total of 160 credits.

“Engineering education cannot afford to stay static. We want our graduates to be technically sound, intellectually curious and confident enough to solve problems that do not have textbook answers. This curriculum gives them the space and the tools to do exactly that.”

Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar

Aligned with NEP 2020 and the National Credit Framework

The revised curriculum is fully aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Credit Framework. It integrates multidisciplinary education, skill development and multiple academic pathways into a single coherent structure. The policy encourages universities and institutes to move away from examination-centric learning; IIT Ropar has responded by embedding experiential learning, research and social engagement directly into the credit system.

Dual Degree in Emerging Disciplines Now Accessible to B.Tech. Students

One of the most significant additions is the Interdisciplinary Integrated Dual-Degree Programme. Students who maintain a CGPA of 7.0 or above can opt for this pathway after the sixth semester. By spending an additional year and completing 40 extra credits, they graduate with both a B.Tech. in their home discipline and an M.Tech. in an interdisciplinary field. Disciplines on offer include Data Science, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Cyber Security, Energy Systems, and Quantum Science and Technology, among others.

Credits for Research, Startups and National-Level Achievements

The curriculum formally recognizes student achievements beyond the classroom. Students can earn academic credits for research publications, startup activities, leadership roles and outstanding performance at national and international platforms. Dedicated provisions have been introduced for research projects, startup incubation through the institute’s Technology Business Incubation Foundation, and entrepreneurial internships. The intent, the institute says, is to build a culture of innovation from the first year rather than treating it as an add-on.

Minor Degrees, Specializations and a Smoother Branch Change Process

The framework also provides clearly defined pathways for Minor Degrees and Specializations, letting students build expertise in emerging domains without sacrificing depth in their primary discipline.

The institute has also reworked its Branch Change policy to protect students who switch disciplines. Courses completed in the original branch that no longer form part of the new programme will be credited toward open elective requirements, ensuring no academic work is lost in transition.

Humanities, Ethics and Life Skills Woven into the Degree

Alongside technical training, the new curriculum integrates Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Knowledge Systems, ethics, communication skills and life skills as part of the core academic experience. Co-curricular engagement through NSS/NSO, Music and Art are also built into the framework, reflecting the institute’s view that a well-rounded engineer is as important as a technically proficient one.
