Canadian International School Bangalore successfully conducted its annual Terry Fox Run today, with over 1000 participants taking part in the charity fundraising event dedicated to cancer research and awareness. The non-competitive run honors the legacy of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.

The event brought together students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of the Bangalore community for a 5K route starting at the school campus and running in the Machenahalli Lake park. Participants engaged in various activities including running, walking, cycling, and skating as part of the fundraising initiative.

“Canadian International School has been organizing the Terry Fox Run since 2010, and we continue to see strong community participation each year,” said Mukesh Tolani, Terry Fox Foundation, Bangalore. “The funds raised contribute directly to cancer research initiatives through our partnership with Tata Memorial Hospital.”

Student-led fundraising activities preceded the run, including merchandise sales, food stalls, and digital campaigns organized through various platforms. These initiatives were coordinated by student committees as part of the school’s community service programs.

The Terry Fox Run is part of a global movement that takes place in over 60 countries annually, raising funds for cancer research. The Canadian International School Bangalore chapter has contributed to this international effort for 15 years.

“The 15th Annual Terry Fox Run at Canadian International School, Bangalore was truly inspiring to witness. Seeing our students, faculty, families, and the greater Bangalore community come together on September 20th to honor Terry Fox’s legacy of courage and determination while supporting cancer research embodies the very values, we strive to instill in our learning community. The enthusiasm and compassion displayed by every participant – from our youngest kindergarten students to our graduating seniors – reminds us that when we unite for a meaningful cause, we can make a real difference. Terry’s message that ‘anything is possible if you try’ continues to resonate powerfully with our students, and I’m incredibly proud of how our school community has embraced this tradition for fifteen consecutive years. The funds raised today will contribute to vital cancer research, ensuring that Terry’s dream lives on through the actions of our next generation.” said Shweta Sastri, Managing Director, Canadian International School Bangalore.

“For 14 years, we have come together to celebrate the life of Terry Fox, a person of incredible courage and vision who would not let cancer determine the value of his life. Each year, we write the names of those in our lives touched by cancer, and we are grateful for the millions who battle daily to put this human illness behind us. Together we do this, and at CIS we are grateful to host this annual event and bring our greater community together,” said Ted Mockrish, Head of School, Canadian International School Bangalore.

“Early detection saves lives. By being aware of subtle symptoms and encouraging timely screenings, we can fight cancer more effectively. Preventive tools like vaccines are equally powerful in reducing cancer burden” said Dr. Shruthi Shivdas.

“This is my second year with the Terry Fox Run, and I always look forward to this special day. It’s heartening to see so many parents and families come together for one cause – supporting cancer research and development. The arrangements were truly wonderful, and I’m grateful to be part of this meaningful event once again,” said Amit, CIS Parent.

“I’ve been at CIS for five years and have volunteered at the Terry Fox Run for three years in a row. From running in my first year, to offering water, to selling shirts and helping with introductions this year, each experience has been meaningful. It’s inspiring to see how the event has grown, with more people joining in and raising awareness for cancer research. I feel proud to be part of a community that comes together for such an important cause,” said Luciano, Student Volunteer.

Representatives from Cytecare Cancer Hospital also sponsored and attended the event to speak about current cancer research developments and the importance of early detection and prevention to combat cancer.

The run concluded with recognition of participating groups and acknowledgment of fundraising achievements. Proceeds from the event will be directed to the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, the beneficiary organization identified by the Terry Fox Foundation.
