All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian plumbing Education (IPA) to introduce plumbing education in Engineering and Architecture institutions across India. Professor Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the AICTE, and Gurmit Singh Arora, National President of the Indian Plumbing Association, signed the MoU.

With this agreement, now students studying Engineering, Architecture, or Interior Designing, or graduates with a ‘Major’ Degree in Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or Interior Designing, will be able to take a 4-credit course in ‘Plumbing’ (Water and Sanitation) as part of this MoU.

This course would be a component of the proposed Full MEP course, which would be created as a Minor degree in the future.

According to Gurmit Singh Arora, National President, India Plumbing Association, this is a tremendous opportunity for the whole plumbing sector stakeholders since Plumbing will become more organised and structured following this progressive development. Through AICTE’s faculty development programmes, IPA will train Institutional Faculty to administer the Plumbing course. One of IPA’s goals is to educate and instruct engineers, architects, and students in these fields on the characteristics of excellent and proper plumbing techniques

Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE said, “There is a strong felt requirement of the Plumbing curriculum in Engineering and Architecture curriculum as plumbing leads to the health of a building. The Indian Plumbing Association and the AICTE have collaborated to create a 50-hour plumbing course that would be 80 percent theory and 20 percent practise.”

IPA and AICTE will urge all AICTE-accredited educational institutions to provide a Plumbing (Water and Sanitation) programme to prepare students for their careers in the industry.
