IDP Education, a provider of international education services and co-owner of IELTS, on July 16 announced that IELTS in India will transition completely from IELTS on Paper to IELTS on Computer from September 2026. The transition aims to provide test takers with greater flexibility, faster results and a more convenient testing experience, while continuing to deliver the globally trusted IELTS assessment.
As part of this transition, IELTS on Paper will be available in India until the end of August 2026. Candidates who prefer the paper-based test format can register for the final three available IELTS on Paper test dates scheduled on 25 July, 6 August and 22 August 2026.
IELTS on Computer offers test takers the same trusted IELTS format, question pattern, level of difficulty and scoring criteria as IELTS on Paper, while providing a more flexible test experience. Candidates can benefit from faster results, greater availability of test dates, and computer-enabled features such as an on-screen timer, easy navigation across questions, and a digital interface designed to support their test journey.
From September 2026 onwards, candidates in India will be able to choose from two IELTS on Computer options:
- IELTS on Computer: Candidates will complete the Listening, Reading and Writing sections on a computer, while the Speaking test will continue to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner. The format offers features such as typing responses directly on screen, easy editing during the Writing section, and clear audio through headphones during the Listening section.
- IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper): Designed for candidates who prefer writing by hand, this format allows test takers to complete the Listening and Reading sections on a computer, while continuing to complete the Writing section on paper. The Speaking test will continue to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner.
