Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW), University of Delhi, in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office for South Asia, on Apr 10 launched Empower Flow: A Certificate Course for Menstrual Health & Hygiene – “Spotlight Red.” The initiative positions IPCW as the first institution in India to introduce a structured academic programme dedicated to menstrual health.

Aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which emphasises women’s dignity, the launch brought together prominent national and international dignitaries. Chief Guest Smt. Nayana Sahasrabuddhe, Vice President of Bharatiya Stree Shakti, was joined by Guests of Honour Ms. Lena Bäcker (Sweden) and Ms. Joyce Poan, Chief of Education Sector, UNESCO New Delhi. Distinguished guest Dr. Huma Masood, UNESCO New Delhi also graced the occasion. The programme was led by Principal Prof. Poonam Kumria. The event was co-ordinated by Dr Chetna Gupta.

Designed to address the persistent stigma and knowledge gaps surrounding menstruation, the course integrates health, education, and gender perspectives. It aims to equip students with knowledge, sensitivity, and leadership skills to drive informed conversations and promote menstrual equity.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Principal Prof. Kumria emphasised that lack of menstrual awareness and resources continues to disrupt education for many young women. Smt. Sahasrabuddhe called for open dialogue, stating that menstruation must be normalised as a natural phenomenon. Ms. Poan underscored its importance as a public education concern, while Dr. Masood stressed embedding menstrual health within institutional systems and policy frameworks.

With plans to extend outreach across colleges and communities nationwide, the initiative seeks to spark informed dialogue and inclusive practices. The launch reflects a strong partnership between IPCW and UNESCO to advance gender-sensitive education and youth well-being, aligning with broader goals of social inclusion and sustainable development.
