Organised by the SAEINDIA Southern Section in association with the Department of Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, 85 finalist teams from across the country showcased advanced unmanned aerial systems at the SAEISS Drone Development Challenge (DDC) 2026, hosted by KCG College of Technology.

DDC 2026 followed a rigorous three-stage evaluation model designed to mirror real-world aerospace assessment frameworks. On Day 1, participating teams presented detailed technical design reports covering aerodynamic calculations, propulsion architecture, structural configuration and mission strategy before an expert jury panel. This was followed by a comprehensive physical inspection of the drone systems to validate build quality, compliance and engineering accuracy.

On Days 2 and 3, teams moved to live flight demonstrations, where drones were tested under monitored conditions for endurance, manoeuvrability, stability, payload handling capability and mission completion precision. The structured evaluation ensured that students were assessed not only on design concepts but also on execution, reliability and operational performance.

Organisers noted that the challenge was conceptualized to simulate industry-grade validation processes, preparing students for careers in aerospace manufacturing, drone services, defence technology and emerging unmanned aerial systems applications.

With participation from regulatory authorities, aerospace scientists and industry leaders — including representatives from MOOG India and the SAEINDIA Southern Section — the competition reinforced the growing collaboration between academia and industry in strengthening India’s drone ecosystem.

Senior officials including Shri R. Rajendran, Deputy Director General, DGCA (Chennai), and Shri Sundaramurthy T. K., Former Mission Director, ISRO, attended the event, signalling strong regulatory and space-sector interest in student-led innovation aligned with India’s growing unmanned aviation ambitions.

Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chairman, Hindustan Group of Institutions, said, “India’s drone sector is expanding rapidly, and institutions must move beyond classroom teaching to create platforms where students build, test and validate real systems. The Drone Development Challenge reflects our commitment to experiential learning and to nurturing engineers who are industry-ready and innovation-driven.”

Dignitaries at the event emphasised the importance of regulatory compliance, safety standards and indigenous technological capability in building a globally competitive drone industry. The Drone Development Challenge underscores KCG College of Technology’s focus on hands-on engineering education and its role in contributing to India’s expanding unmanned aviation landscape.
