Hangeul Day commemorates the achievements of The Great King Sejong, who created Hangeul (Korean Alphabet), a UNESCO designated World Record Heritage. This special day also promotes and celebrates the excellence and originality of Hangeul. This year marks the 575th anniversary of The Great King Sejong’s creation, Hangeul, and every year on Hangeul Day, events to celebrate the day are held not only in Korea but also all around the world wherever the Korean language educational institutes are.
Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) jointly holds various events with the Centre for Korean Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University to reflect on the meaning of Hangeul Day every year, and this ’14th All India Korean Language Speech Contest’ is also being held as a part of this celebration.
The All India Korean Language Speech Contest marks its 14th anniversary this year. It is India’s only official Korean Language Speech Contest and is being held since 2008. The Korean language institutions all over India (universities, King Sejong Institutes, etc.) first review and submit their students’ manuscripts, and then the final participants are selected through a screening process who eventually advance to the final round of the contest. The event, which was held as a face-to-face event until 2019, was held as a virtual event due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and will be held as a real-time virtual event this year as well.
