Bharti Enterprises Founder and Chairman, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration by the University of Bath, United Kingdom (UK). The honour was conferred at the University’s summer graduation ceremony held at the historic Bath Abbey, in recognition of Mr. Mittal’s contribution to global business, entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

Mr. Mittal is a pioneer of the Indian telecommunications revolution and has played a pivotal role in shaping the global communications landscape through Bharti Airtel, one of the world’s leading telecom companies. His leadership across diverse industries, from telecom and digital infrastructure to financial services and space communications, as also his enduring dedication to ensuring equity in access to education articulate purpose, innovation and global ambition.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Phil Taylor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bath said, “We are very proud to honour Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal’s considerable achievements in enterprise, leadership and service to society. Not only has he built a world-leading global enterprise but his humanitarian work has impacted the lives of over 3.7 million children through education and rural development. He sends our graduating students a powerful message of the importance of giving back to society, which we hope will inspire them in their future careers. We are delighted to welcome Mr. Mittal to our alumni community, joining his son and daughter who previously graduated from our School of Management and Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.”

The University of Bath is one of the UK’s leading academic institutions, known for high-impact research, teaching excellence, and an outstanding student experience. Ranked among the UK’s top ten universities and placed within the top 10% globally (QS 2026), the University of Bath is at the forefront of addressing pressing global challenges. Its research and education ethos is firmly rooted in real-world relevance and international collaboration.

nferment of the Doctorate, Mr. Mittal said, “I’m honoured to receive this recognition from the University of Bath, an institution renowned for its intellectual rigour, spirit of enterprise, and engagement with the world beyond the classroom. This moment is made especially meaningful by the personal connection my family shares with the University. That education holds the power to open doors of opportunity, uplift communities, and shape nations has always been an article of faith for me. I remain deeply committed in my contributions to the rapidly advancing India–UK collaboration across both industry and academia, given the extraordinary reservoir of talents and skills that the countries have to offer.”

The honour from the University of Bath marks Mr. Mittal’s ninth honorary doctorate and his third from a UK institution. He was earlier conferred the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the University of Leeds in 2009 and the Doctor of Civil Law (Honoris Causa) by Newcastle University in 2012.

He has previously served on the Governing Body of the London Business School and was a member of the Cambridge India Partnership Advisory Board at the University of Cambridge. Mr. Mittal continues to support academic collaboration through his role on the Vice-Chancellor’s Circle of Advisors at the   University of Cambridge and as a member of the India Advisory Group at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In India, he has served on the Boards of Governors of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Lucknow, and IIT Bombay. He currently serves as Chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Board at Plaksha University and as a member of the Governing Board at the Indian School of Business.
