Acclaimed Odissi Danseuse Sharmila Mukerjee and her ensemble Sanjali will present their brand new production on 30th July 2023 at Bangalore International Centre, Domlur. It will be for the first time in Bengaluru, Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece, ‘Natir Puja,’ comes alive in the form of an Odissi Dance Drama. Titled ‘The Dancer’s Worship.’
Sharmila’s interpretation of Tagore’s ‘Natir Puja’ revolves around Srimati, the story of a ‘Rajnartaki’/ a court dancer. In Natir Puja (Devotion of the Court-Dancer), the focal point is the untainted spirit of a humble dancer, who perceives herself as undeserving even to be present in the presence of Buddha’s teachings. However, her profound modesty portrays a fundamental principle of Buddhism. The devout followers of Buddha recognize her unwavering dedication and implore her to conduct the sacred ceremonies as a priestess before Buddha’s altar. As a result, her devotion surpasses the offerings made by the royal princesses, causing some of them to feel offended. The story of Srimati touches upon intricate themes of injustice, devotion, and spiritual freedom.
