Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi), in collaboration with the Raising A Mathematician (RAM) Foundation, announced the launch of Maths Circles Delhi, to help middle school students experience the joy and creativity of mathematics beyond the classroom.
Maths Circles are outreach programs that connect school students with professional mathematicians in informal settings, such as weekend or after-school gatherings. Instead of typical lectures, students collaborate in groups to explore complex, fascinating maths problems, many of which lack standard formulas or solutions, in these dynamic, discussion-based sessions. The goal is to foster confidence, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for the subject.
With the core belief that maths is a beautiful subject that every child can enjoy, Maths Circles Delhi is aimed at students from Classes 6 to 8 who are curious, enthusiastic, and eager to explore mathematical ideas in a collaborative and nurturing environment. Weekly sessions will be held on the IIIT-Delhi campus, guided by faculty members from the Institute.
Registrations are now open for the Maths Circles Delhi. A selection test will be held to shortlist the students for this one-year program. With only 35-40 seats available, early application is encouraged to ensure a spot in this transformative experience.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Kaushik Kalyanaraman, Head of the Department of Mathematics at IIIT-Delhi, said, “We are happy about setting up a Maths Circles chapter at IIIT-Delhi in collaboration with RAM. This allows our faculty members to engage with young and enthusiastic minds, and helps them appreciate mathematical research beyond treating the subject as a collection of problem-solving tricks. We are highly enthusiastic about this new way of engaging with our immediate society beyond our everyday research and teaching. The success of programs like these will only help foster a better outcome for our country’s higher education goals.”
Together with IIIT-Delhi, RAM Foundation aims to build a community of young problem-solvers who view mathematics as a language to express their creativity rather than as a subject to fear.
