- Veerandra, a final-year B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering student at GITAM (Deemed to be University), Hyderabad campus, has won two bronze medals at the 5th India Open International Kickboxing Cup 2026, held from February 4 to 8 at the Indira Gandhi Arena, New Delhi.
The tournament featured athletes from nearly ten countries. Competing in the Senior Category, Veerandra advanced through multiple rounds to secure two podium finishes at the international meet.
Reflecting on the achievement, Veerandra said, “Competing at this level required months of disciplined preparation. Balancing training with academics was demanding, but the experience has strengthened my focus and resilience. I look forward to competing at higher levels.”
Congratulating him, the campus sports leadership noted that consistent preparation and responsible representation remain central to student participation in competitive sport at the university.
His success continues a visible pattern of student achievement across disciplines. Riya Saboo won gold at the 36th National Games and later secured gold and silver medals at the 61st National Roller Skating Championship. Aishwarya Pilla has earned medals at Asian and Oceania Skating Championships. In fencing, B. Pavani secured podium finishes at the SAAP State Fencing Championships and represented at national university-level competitions.
Across its campuses in Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, GITAM maintains dedicated sports facilities including athletics tracks, football and cricket grounds, badminton and basketball courts, tennis courts, cricket nets, and gymnasiums. Students compete in recognised district, state, national, and international events.
The university offers Sports Quota admissions and Sports Scholarships for students who have represented recognised competitions such as SGFI, Khelo India, CBSE Nationals, and AIU events. Scholarships provide tuition fee waivers of up to 100%, along with hostel support, and are renewed subject to academic standing and continued participation.
