The Nahe Kadam Balwadi in Thane central prison is one of five “Nanhe Kadam Balwadi” prison crèches in Maharashtra, dedicated to the holistic development of children of incarcerated mothers and prison staff alike. This compassionate system of crèches was first envisioned by DIG Yogesh Desai and launched in December 2022, establishing an innovative public-private partnership. Community groups and social initiatives play a crucial role in this model, ensuring the children’s needs are met in a nurturing, safe and inclusive environment.

Target Publications Pvt. Ltd., an educational publishing, celebrated Children’s Day with for children residing in the Thane Central Prison premises with their mothers, as well as children of Thane prison staff. The celebration, held at in Nahe Kadam Balwadi outside the 4 walls of prison but within the premises, brought smiles to children aged 2 to 10 years through engaging activities that lasted over an hour.

The event began with a lively storytelling and puppet show conducted by Manorama Shetty, an experienced educator and content developer at Target Publications. This was followed by creative craft-making sessions, interactive games, and picture charades. To add a creative spark, Target Publications also distributed drawing books, which the children enthusiastically began working on during the event.

Rani Bhosale, Superintendent of Thane Central Prison, acknowledged the event’s impact saying: “The Nnahe Kadam Balwadi for children of incarcerated mothers and prison guard children, started within the premises just a week ago, has had a strong beginning with this event. We look forward to more enriching initiatives and workshops with Target Publications.”

Tushar Chaudhari, Executive Director of Target Publications speaking on the remarkable initiative added: “It is an honour to collaborate with the prison authorities to bring joy and learning to the children of incarcerated mothers and the hardworking Thane prison staff. This event reaffirms our dedication to fostering creativity, education, and joy among young minds.”

Counsellor Anushri Shevde, Program Associate, Aangan Trust said the event provided an insightful learning opportunity for the children attending the Balwadi. The storytelling, crafts, and games provided them with an engaging and meaningful outlet for creativity and self-expression. “We are excited to continue this collaboration with Target Publications to further enrich the lives of these children.”

Children’s Day 2024 MESSAGES:

“By fostering empathy, we equip children with the emotional intelligence they need to form deep connections, build meaningful relationships, and navigate life with compassion and understanding. We strongly believe that teachers play a pivotal role, not just as guides, but as confidants and friends, fostering these values in young hearts. This Children’s Day, we hope that we can help every child lead with love, which can help them to build a world which is filled with empathy and kindness.” – Shaheen Mistri, Founder & CEO, Teach For India.

“This Children Day we should remind ourselves of our shared responsibility to create learning spaces prioritising resilience, emotional intelligence, and balanced development. Today’s children face a unique blend of challenges that past generations could scarcely imagine—from navigating a hyper-digital world to coping with intense academic pressures and the mental toll of competitive environments. It’s essential that we foster an education system that nurtures both their intellectual growth and emotional well-being. As educators, parents, and a society, we must champion approaches that equip children not only with knowledge but with the life skills, empathy, and adaptability they need to thrive holistically and shape a brighter, more inclusive future.” – Manish Rastogi, CEO, Zee Learn Pvt Ltd.

“It is important for all children to acquire skills that will help them survive and grow in the society. It is also equally important for them to help the society grow along with their individual growth. And that is why we encourage our learners to be intellectually curious and morally strong.  As they are gently nudged to grow into responsible and compassionate global citizens, the school emphasises on every learner being honest, fair and ethical. Their confidence in their own convictions will give them the courage to stand up for what is correct as they face the tough challenges of today’s competitive world. A child’s school should be an extension of their family, providing a safe environment in which they can explore ideas and feelings. The Excelsior family wishes all the children a very Happy Children’s Day!! – Geeta Sachdeva, Director of School Administration and Operations, Excelsior American School

“In today’s digital age, where screens often dominate children’s attention through video games, smartphones, and tablets, many children miss the invaluable benefits that come from outdoor play and physical exercise. Teaching children the importance of physical activity not only enhances their physical health, reducing the risk of obesity but also cultivates vital social skills, teamwork and emotional resilience through interactive play. Engaging in sports or outdoor activities improves cognitive function and mental health, providing a natural counterbalance to the stimulating, yet isolating, effects of prolonged screen exposure. Celebrating Children’s Day by promoting these values serves as a reminder of our responsibility to guide the next generation toward a balanced, active lifestyle that fosters both health and happiness.” Dr. Maithili Tambe, CEO, The Academy School(TAS), Pune

“Today’s children face critical challenges that require immediate action. A billion children are at risk from climate change, including pollution and displacement. With the rise of AI and digital platforms, protecting children’s privacy and mental health is crucial. We must build a world where every child is safe, supported, and able to thrive.” – Raj Singhal, Co-founder & CEO of Footprints Childcare
