May 11, 2025, marks a significant celebration of innovation, ingenuity, and India’s technological spirit as the nation observes National Technology Day. The official theme for this year — “YANTRA – Yugantar for Advancing New Technology, Research & Acceleration” — reflects both our rich heritage and a bold vision for the future.

Unveiled by the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), this year’s theme brings a powerful symbolism. YANTRA, a term steeped in India’s scientific and spiritual legacy, represents more than mechanical design; it embodies synergy, scalable systems, and engineered precision. Yugantar, meaning epochal transformation, signifies India’s dynamic shift from being a technology adopter to emerging as a global technology leader.

This year’s celebrations are designed to be a convergence of the nation’s brightest minds — policymakers, technocrats, scientists, academic leaders, industry pioneers, and startup innovators — all aligning towards a common mission: to fast-track India’s journey in deep-tech, precision engineering, and transformative R&D.

Commemorating a Historic Legacy

National Technology Day commemorates the pivotal events of May 11, 1998 — the successful nuclear tests at Pokhran under Operation Shakti and the maiden flight of the indigenously developed Hansa-3 aircraft. These milestones cemented India’s capabilities in defense and aeronautical engineering. In honor of these breakthroughs, then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 as National Technology Day.

Since then, the day has grown in stature, becoming a flagship platform to celebrate scientific excellence, technological innovation, and the critical link between science, society, and industry.

Voices of Innovation

Anku Jain, Managing Director, MediaTek India:
“India’s technology sector remains a vital force, showcasing robust growth driven by advancements in semiconductors, connectivity, and digital infrastructure. Ranking 39th in the Global Innovation Index, the nation holds immense potential to spearhead sustainable and breakthrough technologies. At MediaTek, we believe that nurturing local R&D, enhancing the semiconductor ecosystem, and investing in future-ready skills are essential to positioning India as a global innovation powerhouse.”

Abir Aich, Executive Vice President – Head Academics & New Technology, Aptech Ltd.:
“On this National Technology Day, we celebrate the momentum behind India’s digital transformation, especially in the rapidly evolving AVGC-XR sector. Backed by strategic initiatives like the India AI Mission and progressive skilling policies, the AVGC-XR industry is set for exponential growth. The recent WAVES 2025 forum in Mumbai, led by our Honourable Prime Minister, showcases national commitment to this creative economy. By focusing on the three pillars — Content, Creativity, and Culture — we are not only driving employment and entrepreneurship but also shaping a globally recognized cultural-tech footprint. India is poised to become the world’s leading hub for digital content, gaming, fashion, music, and immersive media.”

Looking Ahead

National Technology Day 2025 is more than a celebration — it’s a call to action. As India steps confidently into a new era of innovation, the synergy between government, industry, and academia becomes ever more critical. Under the vision of YANTRA, the nation aims not just to keep pace with the world but to lead it — advancing technologies that are sustainable, inclusive, and globally transformative.
